What kind of game is Defend the Night (DtN)?
Defend the Night is a dark fantasy MMORPG with a challenging, return to classic, gameplay that will keep you on the edge of your seat. In the dangerous world of Certovia, power demands to be earned—not bought. As a result, skill and knowledge will be key to surpassing your opposition. DtN will feature some traditional RPG classes; character progression through leveling, ability, talent acquisition; and player-owned city development. Players will be able to head out into the darkness of the world, either solo or with a group of friends, and level through a variety of options, both PvE and PvP. Choose the leveling path that works for you, without being forced into a specific style of play or linear progression, in this sandbox-style MMO.
What makes it different from other MMORPGs?
The current MMORPG genre has left behind many of its fans, abandoning the principles which endeared classic MMOs to so many of us. DtN will feature a mixture of new, modern mechanics and art; with gameplay that brings back some classical elements of MMOs that have been left out, or watered down, in more recent games.
Players will be able to level and progress their characters in a variety of ways, including: exploration, PvE and PvP events, dungeon crawls, raiding, and player-owned city triggered siege/defense events.
Global leaderboards will display the progress and highlight the best of the best for both PvE and PvP players.
Is this just another shameless cash grab or clone of an existing MMORPG?
The term “Pay to Win” fills us with as much dread as it does in our fans. We believe it’s possible to build an MMORPG that’s both accessible and sustainable without generating revenue off of items that affect gameplay.
Defend the Night is influenced by classic MMO experiences, while remaining a modern MMO.
The unique progression, PvP, lore, and event systems are being designed, from the ground up, to be accessible and enjoyable, without forcing players to reach into their wallets.
How much will it cost?
Multiple pricing tier options are currently being explored, including: Free to Play (ftp), Subscription, and a Demo mode that would preview the subscription tier up to a certain level. The subscription tier will provide many additional customizations and horizontal progression features, and the expected cost will be somewhere in the range of a typical MMO, or video streaming, monthly subscription. Additional details will be provided as they become available.
When will the game be available?
We wish we had a date that Ninja Loot Games(NLG) could lock in for DtN‘s release. However, it is still in early development, and too many unknown variables are floating around to be accurate. As soon as those variables are discovered and appropriately handled, our community will be updated with the projected release.
Defend the Night has been in development since mid-2017 and is currently in beginning alpha development and testing. If you’re interested in getting early access to the game, preference will be given to early subscribers. You can Register here for updates which will also automatically sign you up for the upcoming closed Alpha/Beta. Registrants can also help shape the direction of the game and engage in direct dialogue with devs, and player community, through our Forums and/or Discord chat.
What’s the art style? Realism or Stylized? Western or Eastern?
Defend the Night is being developed in the United States and is aiming for a more realistic, medieval, art style that is designed to be dark and foreboding.
Is Defend the Night open world?
While there will be both open world and instanced components, Defend the Night will provide many opportunities for world exploration. It will also rely on procedural instancing, player created/modified environments, and matchmaking to connect players and enter certain game events. There will be no required, tedious quests asking the player to deliver items or spend most of their time autorunning around the landscape just to slow player progression. DtN aims to provide multiple options for unique, replayable, and exciting experiences to level your character, craft/acquire new gear or components, make allies, build your (city, town, home), and compete for the top ranks.
Will there be Building Systems?
Players will have the option to form their own homestead, progress to a town and possibly even a full city. Players will be able to join or create a community, become a citizen or ruler of that city, set up wares, establish local storefronts, manage the defenses, and even establish a guild in that city. Each city will have its own diplomacy and faction set by the city governor.
More information about these cities and how they will operate will be announced during later news releases of Defend the Night. The best way to keep up to date is by registering

What are the character classes?
There are currently 11 classes: Information here
These classes are not final, as more will likely be added over time and possibly even pre-launch.
Are the classes really that different, or can each class do a bit of everything?
Yes, classes will be very different. Some newer MMOs have tried to make each class all-around capable, but that will not be the case here. This isn’t to say that classes will be one-dimensional or can’t be customized, but they will be much more focused than in most modern MMOs.
Will there be character customization?
Yes, you can see an early preview of the character creation system in Devblog-5.
How will combat work?
Defend the Night will feature tab-targeted combat and area selected spellcasting and abilities. Group roles will be based on a system of tank, healer, DPS, and crowd control. Classes will have a variety of basic attacks, spells, and abilities. Expect spellcasting classes to be more mobile in DtN than other modern MMOs and not solely rely on sitting for mana regeneration.
Will it be possible to solo?
It will be possible to solo, but DtN will be a challenging game that will require specific character classes and builds to make soloing viable. While a skilled solo artist may find great reward in Defend the Night, there will be exceptional danger in going it alone.
Is there a character level cap?
Yes, Level 50 will be the initial level cap at launch.
How do characters achieve progression?
Leveling can be achieved through killing enemies, victories in various game events, mentoring newer players, and questing. Leveling will also unlock new talents and abilities. Killing enemies and completing quests will often reward characters with new gear and coin. Players can also build wealth and skills from trading and crafting.
Are there talent trees?
Yes, there will be 3 unique talent trees per class, each with a particular focus.
Will there be dungeon and raid bosses?
Absolutely. There will be boss encounters for both progression levels and end-game events, as well as dungeons.
What are the maximum group and raid sizes?
This is currently undecided and is subject to change before release, but 6 person group and 24 member raid party system is being discussed.
Network performance will be evaluated in upcoming internal testing and will provide additional details, once complete.
How will loot work?
Enemies will only drop a single version of each item in their loot tables. This means that if a group of 6 gets an epic sword drop off a boss, only one player will be able to loot the sword. From a UI perspective, loot will be decided by a variation of the need/greed roll system.
How do the Tower Defense events work?
A couple of the possible progression game modes are solo/co-op survival and PvP tower defense. Your character will be both the leader of your forces and the builder in this mode of gameplay. Each round, enemies will charge your keep and you will need to purchase and assist friendly defender units to outlast this encounter. In PvP, your opponent will also be facing enemy waves, and the last to survive wins. Players will be able to complete side-objectives or solo jungle mobs to gain income, purchase new defenders, and send attackers against their opponents.
Shoutout to Zolden of Zolden Games, creator of the popular Mines and Magic on Starcraft 2 Arcade, for inspiration on some of these mechanics. Check out Zolden’s new version of Mines and Magic on Steam.
Can I have alternate characters?
Yes. The total number of alt slots is yet to be decided, but players will be able to have multiple character slots.
Will there be player guilds?
Yes.
Do you have Discord?
Yes, discord.gg/vZrrKTw
What platforms will the game use?
Only PC, for now. However, other options will be explored in the future.
How can I support development?
Community-driven development is a working function in Defend the Night! A great way to support the game is to register with the site, participate in our forum discussions, join the conversation on our Discord server.
We have a merchandise storefront for those interested in supporting early development and scoring some DtN swag. Profits go towards developing Defend the Night systems and operating costs.
DtN is also promoting the Defend the Dome Club. If you send proof of purchase of a hat (or any clothing item) to Promo@defendthenightgame.com with Subject: DtD you will be provided a Defend the Dome (DtD) role in our Discord labeled Defender. Please provide website forum and discord name and allow 3 business days for a review!
Crowdfunding
DtN will likely explore a crowdfunding campaign once more internal testing has concluded and we can better share the vision and product. Too many games mislead their audience and crowdfund off of nothing more than hype and promises. We’d prefer to present more details and real gameplay before asking for support from our players.
In the future, supporter packages will be offered through this site for access to closed testing. Character testing/supporter accounts will contain unique rewards that carry over into launch. In addition, supporter badges will be available to be displayed next to character name to show off players’ dedication to DtN. These perks will be largely cosmetic and will not provide gameplay advantages.
Early registrants will get first shot at alpha/beta testing, but we can only accept a finite number of free testers.
Please keep an eye on the website for campaign updates if you’re interested in becoming an early backer
